What the Experts Say I

The research study conducted by Davis (2018) of “Objectification, sexualization, and misrepresentation: Social media and the college experience” presents the case study of two Instagram profiles that target college-ages individuals with the purpose of identifying how females are presented there. The research results have revealed that women were frequently objectified and sexually presented on both Four Year Party and College Nationwide Instagram accounts, as the majority of the posts tend to emphasize the attractiveness of a certain girl or several of them. Another finding of the research study was that women were frequently portrayed as submissive to men on both Instagram profiles, as there were several posts of “young men biting young women’s breasts and slapping their buttocks” (p. 5), which can be perceived as not women being submissive but also as a violence against women promotion. Consequently, based on such aspects it can be stated that both objectification and sexualization of women can be considered as a norm for college students, who prefer portraying them as objects only. Therefore, as college students are the growing working and political force in the society, the issue of objectifying women is a concerning one, as such a trend may continue among the particular generation in the future, violating rights and even security of the representatives of the female gender.
