My View
The mass media can be considered one of the most influential
promotion and advertisement tools in the modern world. An every person
interacts with a number of mass media channels every day without even
recognizing it. Moreover, due to such a significance of the mentioned tool,
people unconsciously are affected by it. For example, 47% of Americans have
stated Facebook have an influence on their purchase decisions (Baer, J., n.d.),
making advertising through Facebook a good decision for the companies. The
women pictures the mass media presents are also not so realistic. Due to the
fact mass media presents “ideal bodies” and advertises lingerie by using the
most popular models, the women consider themselves not as beautiful as the ones
they see on the screen, which can lead to cases of suicide commitment and lack
of confidentiality. Therefore, there is a need of finding the solution to the
problem of misinterpretation of women in mass media.
There are
several solutions that can be implemented in order to solve the mentioned
problem. To begin with, ensuring female team members are responsible for hiring
new employees can be used a solution. In case the women are responsible for
hiring new personnel, they would try not to hire only the most attractive ones.
Observing mass media channels every day themselves, they are certain about the
amount of attractive women mass media presents and the amount of the normal
women in the real world, making them hire the new female employees based on
their skills but not the appearance only. The main advantage of the solution is
that the females would be presented with more employment opportunities. In case
the mass media channels are obligatory to hire the female HR personnel, a large
amount of unemployed women would be presented an opportunity to work and ensure
the other women that observe the mentioned channels will see a real picture of
the women in the modern world. As for the disadvantages, the main one is that
there is a probability the mentioned women will not hire the attractive ones at
all. Aiming at presenting the general public the real image of the women, they
can overreact, presenting the world the image of only the normal ones, when the
attractive women would not be given a chance, regardless of the fact they could
be skillful too. In case the beautiful women are not seen at the screen at all,
the women would not know the ideals of the beauty, leading to their refusal to
try to look better every day or go to the gym, motivating themselves the amount
of the beautiful women in the world is not so large.
Another
solution to the particular problem is ensuring the diversity is achieved, which
can be done through establishing a law, which states the mass media channels
that fail to present an average proportion of women of different ages,
appearances and nationalities would have to pay a significant amount of taxes
to the government. The main advantage of the solution is ensuring the mass
media would provide the real image of the women in the modern world. Due to the
fact the beautiful or skin women cannot be refused to work in mass media,
presenting a wide range of them including both the black overweight and the
white skinny ones would not present an image of the ideal women to the real
world. Another advantage of the particular solution is the new opportunities to
the women that want to work at a mass media channel but have been refused based
on their appearance. If such a law is established, the women whose appearance
cannot be considered ideal would be treated as professionals based on their
abilities, ensuring they are chosen not only because of their look. As for the
disadvantages, the main one is that in order to establish such a regulation, a
large amount of time is required. Despite the fact mass media presents women
with an ideal appearance in the majority of the cases, classifying the women as
the beautiful and the normal ones would be negatively commented. Moreover, in
case such a law is established, presenting the statistics to the government on
the aspect of percentage of the beautiful and normal women in the mass media
channel would also be not a tolerate statement.
In
conclusion, it can be stated that the problem of misinterpretation of women in
mass media is a concerning topic as it decreases the women’s confidence in
themselves and psychological problems. I consider the solution of establishing
taxes the mass media channels that fail to present a fair image of women
appearance would pay to the government as it would both ensure diversity is
achieved and present the women an opportunity to be hired based on their
abilities. There is a need of solving the particular problem in order to let
the women love themselves and enjoy their lives regardless of suffering they
are not beautiful enough as much as the men do.
