Current Events I

One of the relatively current events that occurred recently related to the issue of sexualization of women in mass media is the discussion of the issue at the Women in the World Summit in 2014 (Pinsky, 2014). One of the young ladies that attended the particular summit was expecting to become motivated about the role of women in the modern society and acquire some knowledge to improve the gender discrimination issue to a more equal extent. However, one of the topics that was discussed in the summit surprised her, as it was neither related to the role of women in the society nor presented from an ethical point of view. The panel members started discussing women and girls using social media, mentioning such statements as “I don’t understand why girls are taking pictures of themselves with their tongues out. Boys don’t want to see that!” or “Instead of doing their math homework, girls are sending nudies!”. The concerning aspect in such a situation was that women were blamed for attem...

The fact that females are less physically strong than men can be stated as an obvious physiological fact. Such an aspect has been concerning in the first centuries of human civilization development, as the ones who had physical power had the political and social ones as well. Living in the modern society, however, can be associated with people being treated based on their knowledge, skills, and internal characteristics in the majority of the cases. The extreme and irrelevant usage of physical power towards other individuals, on the other hand, has become punishable by law in the vast majority of countries, so that people have to solve their issues in a more civilized way. However, violence towards women as a pattern still exists in the modern world, as representatives of the mentioned gender are unable to sufficiently defend themselves if physically abused by a male in the majority of the cases. Despite the fact that a l...

Sexualization of Females in Mass Media

The purpose of the particular blog is to present and discuss such a concerning issue as sexualization of females in mass media. I consider that researching the particular issue is especially important, as sexualization of people of only one gender can be perceived as gender discrimination in the modern society. Both males and females who are exposed to only physically attractive women on mass media may start to consider that all women can, should, or must look that attractive. The particular issue, consequently, leads to a large amount of psychological problems in women, as they are either perceive themselves not attractive compared to the ones on mass media or are rejected by the opposite sex representatives, who think that all women should look the same as they see on mass media. Therefore, researching the particular issue is especially important in order to educate the growing generation of the planet that physical appearance should not be the main factor based on which women...

Other Issues in Media and Society

Being informed about other issues in the modern society relating to the media is important, as it significantly affects the lives of the general population. Despite the topic of sexualization of women in mass media I have chosen for my blog, please consider visiting the following blogs that are both interesting and informative to read: 1) Firstly, the blog of Benjamin Bergel on the topic of "Media and Success in Sports" is worth reviewing, as it addresses such an important concern of the media focusing on scandals more than their sport achievements. I believe that being informed about the particular aspect is important, as the audience of the media, or the general population, can make some actions to ensure that athletes are valued for their achievements, not the ability to attract attention. 2) Secondly, the blog of LĂvia Buhajla named "Why Are Female Athletes Represented Differently in the Media" is an interesting one, researching the specific issue of misrep...

My View

The mass media can be considered one of the most influential promotion and advertisement tools in the modern world. An every person interacts with a number of mass media channels every day without even recognizing it. Moreover, due to such a significance of the mentioned tool, people unconsciously are affected by it. For example, 47% of Americans have stated Facebook have an influence on their purchase decisions (Baer, J., n.d.), making advertising through Facebook a good decision for the companies. The women pictures the mass media presents are also not so realistic. Due to the fact mass media presents “ideal bodies” and advertises lingerie by using the most popular models, the women consider themselves not as beautiful as the ones they see on the screen, which can lead to cases of suicide commitment and lack of confidentiality. Therefore, there is a need of finding the solution to the problem of misinterpretation of women in mass media.        ...

In order to find more information on the issue of sexualization of women in mass media, let me provide several web pages on the particular aspect. Firstly, the article “Ignored or sexualized: How Hollywood is failing women” written by Israelsen-Hartley (2017) can be useful for such a case, as it provides the detailed statistics on female performance in Hollywood movies. The information in the particular article can be useful for the readers to understand that the female picture they witness on Hollywood movies does not represent the real situation on the aspect of physical appearance of women in the modern society. The second web page that can be useful for the readers willing to acquire additional information on the issue is the report of American Psychological Association on the aspect of the effects of female sexualization (“Report of the APA task force on the sexualization of girls”, 2007). The particular source briefly discusses the consequences female sexualization has on fem...

What the Experts Say II

The research study conducted by Frisby (2017) discussed the aspect of sexualization and objectification of female athletes on magazine covers. The research study was based on the sport covers portraying both female and male athletes on such famous sport magazines as Sports Illustrated and ESPN The Magazine. The research results have firstly revealed that only an insignificant portion of magazine covers portrayed female athletes, being equal to 11.9% of the total amount. The researcher has also concluded that females are still objectified on the covers of magazines, based on such aspects as them being presented “in sexualized poses, dressed in scantily clad clothing, and not pictured in their uniform or team sport” (p.27). Based on such an aspect, it can be stated that sexualization and objectification of women exists in any type of mass media, even if physical attractiveness is not considered as the main criteria in a chosen industry. Despite the fact that female athletes are defi...
